This has been the first year since 2009 that the ice on Lake Superior has been safe enough for foot travel to the Apostle Islands Sea Caves near Cornucopia Wisconsin.

Saturday March 8th was the perfect day for a long training hike at the Ice Caves. The day was sunny with beginning temp around 10 F. I wanted to spend about 6 hours on my feet (to prepare for the North Pole Marathon) so I just kept hiking back and forth along the 3 mi stretch of path where the Ice Caves were located. The footing was undulating which was perfect for strengthening my ankles.

At times I would duck into a cave and scurry around on the crystal surfaced ice. It was good test for the Yaktrax that I wore on my shoes. I learned they don’t have good traction on sheer ice.

What a stellar training day – love that ice!
