How to Mix and Mingle

This is the time of year for parties, Graduations, 4th of July Picnics, weddings, and reunions. It can be awkward socializing when you don’t know people. Here are a few tips to help you out.

1. Simply say “Hi” and introduce yourself
• Break the ice with someone (as they may feel uncomfortable not knowing other people too)
• This shows you have confidence
• If you know them but don’t recall their name – offer your name first and they will usually say theirs. Or just be honest and ask them – can you refresh my memory – your name is…?

2. Get curious and listen
• Be genuine and ask curious questions. Most people love to talk about themselves when someone shows interest in them.
• Here are a few questions that work well:
How do you know the host, graduate, bride/groom etc?
Where are you from?
How is your summer going so far?
What is your profession?
What do you do for fun?
What vacation plans do you have?
• Find out what you have in common and share bits about yourself to connect and develop rapport

3. Mix it up
• Circulate and mingle – show you are friendly and meet a number of people
• Let others know you enjoyed meeting them and enjoyed your conversation
• By socializing you may meet a new business associate or find a new friend

Parties are a great way to meet unique people in a fun setting. The key to good mingling and meeting new people is to show genuine interest in others.
