On April 9th, 2014 I will be among 48 people from around the world, including seven Americans, competing in the 12th annual North Pole Marathon. It’s a full 26.2 mile race on top of the world touted as the “world’s coolest marathon” with temperatures -22 F to -34 F. I will be running on an ice sheet 6 – 12 feet thick above 12,000 feet of Arctic Ocean. It is the top of the world.
I am a little nervous but excited to give it my best. I’ve run marathons before and I am a 7 Continents Marathon Finisher. But, this event is different – it is remote, harsh, exotic and COLD.
When I tell people about my upcoming North Pole Marathon adventure, even those who know me best ask, “Why would you want to do that?”
I have 3 “Why’s”
1. I have a simple dream. I want to stand on top of the world. Just once. And to know that, at that very moment, I realize my place in the universe. To feel the fragileness of life and vow to be my best in all I do. I plan to make a snow angel there, too.
2. I have learned that the difference between ordinary and extraordinary is just that little extra. Ordinary is “usual, regular, normal” while extraordinary is “remarkable, special, exceptional”. Often just a little more effort can yield an extraordinary return. This time my “return” is to stand on top of the world.
3. Through my experience, and as an executive coach, I hope to help others see that they have opportunities to stand on top of their worlds every day. To get to the next step in their careers. To start a business. To achieve a healthier work-life balance. To make a difference. I believe we all can accomplish remarkable things if we aim high and focus our efforts.
The North Pole Marathon is an amazing chance of a lifetime – I get a chance to stand on top of the world.
